Our History

Shortly after the conclusion of the Second Vatican Council, the Roman Catholic Church revised the Roman Calendar. Saints were added, and others deleted from the calendar. While the deleted saints remain saints, their respective days were replaced with other saints. This is the case of St. Lazarus the poor man as described in the Gospel of Luke. Four Cuban devotees of St Lazarus, undertook the arduous task of preventing devotion to St. Lazarus from disappearing from the hearts and souls of his followers.

The Legend

The suffering beggar described in the Gospel passage is honored with the name “Lazarus”; the other is simply called “a rich man”. Of all the stories and biblical parables of our Lord, this is the only one in which a personal name is given to one of the protagonists. The name “Lazarus” also belongs to the more famous biblical figure Lazarus of Bethany, also known as Lazarus of the Four Days, who is the subject of a prominent miracle attributed to Jesus in the Gospel of John, in which Jesus resurrects him four days after his death.
